Jalandhar sits close enough to the Himachal hills that you can have breakfast at home and lunch in Dharamshala. We run taxi tours from Jalandhar to the four hill stations Punjabi families ask for most: Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, Dalhousie, Manali and Shimla. The car and driver stay with you for the whole tour, from your gate back to your gate.
Four hill stations at a glance
| Destination | Approx. distance from Jalandhar | Approx. drive time | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj | about 160 km | about 4 to 4.5 hours | Families, short weekend breaks, monasteries and cafes |
| Dalhousie | about 190 km | about 5 hours | Families, couples, quiet walks; snow in winter some years |
| Manali | about 300 km | about 8 to 9 hours | Honeymoon couples, snow trips, longer holidays |
| Shimla | about 250 km | about 6 to 7 hours | Families, first hill trip for the children, winter snow nearby |
Hill times depend heavily on the season. A weekend in May or the Christmas–New Year week can add hours to the last stretch into Manali or Shimla. Landslides in the monsoon can close roads for a while. We always tell you honestly what to expect before you set off.
How each trip is driven
Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj
The quickest hill trip from Jalandhar. The drive heads north through Bhogpur and Dasuya, then climbs through the Kangra valley. Upper Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj have narrow, steep lanes, so the driver may drop you near the main square and wait. Two nights is a comfortable length; it also combines well with a night in Dalhousie.
Dalhousie
Reached through Pathankot and then up into the Chamba district hills. The last part is a long climb with many bends; anyone who gets car-sick should sit in front and say so early. Dalhousie is quieter than Shimla or Manali, which is exactly why many families pick it.
Manali
The long one. From Jalandhar we usually take the Ropar–Kiratpur side, then Bilaspur, Mandi and up the Beas valley through Kullu. Leaving Jalandhar before 6 a.m. gets you in before dark in most seasons. Plan at least three or four nights so the drive does not eat the whole holiday. This is the most popular choice for newly married couples and for anyone who wants real snow in winter.
A note on Rohtang Pass: visiting Rohtang needs a separate online vehicle permit issued by the Himachal authorities, with a daily limit and its own rules and opening season. It is not part of the normal Himachal entry for the car. If Rohtang is on your list, tell us early and check the current position; some days it may not be possible.
Shimla
Two common ways in: via Ropar and Kiratpur, or via Chandigarh and the Parwanoo side. The driver picks based on the day's traffic. Shimla's centre has vehicle restrictions near the Mall Road area, so expect to walk the last bit. Families often add a day around the higher points outside the town for snow in winter.
Hill driving is a different job
Plains driving and hill driving are not the same skill. Our drivers on Himachal tours are used to hairpin bends, giving way to buses on narrow stretches, using engine braking on long descents and judging when fog or ice means waiting rather than pushing on. They will not drive tired on hill roads at night, and they plan stops so the day's driving finishes in daylight wherever possible.
Himachal entry tax and any state permits for the taxi are handled and discussed at booking, together with tolls and parking. The quote is confirmed in advance, so there are no surprises at the border barrier.
Choosing the car
- Couples: a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios is enough for Dharamshala or Shimla. For Manali in winter, many couples prefer the extra space of an Innova Crysta.
- Families of 5–7: Innova Crysta, Toyota Innova or Mahindra Marazzo. More legroom on long climbs and room for jackets and blankets.
- Groups, friends' trips, school or office outings: 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller.
Every vehicle is air-conditioned, and the heater matters just as much once you are above the plains in December.
Planning tips
- Book hotels before the taxi in peak months; the itinerary follows the hotel nights.
- Carry warm clothes even in April and October; evenings are cold.
- Keep ID handy for every adult; hotels ask for it.
- Tell us about elderly passengers or children prone to motion sickness so the driver plans more stops.
Related trips
Dalhousie and Dharamshala are on the same side as the Vaishno Devi road, so some families combine them with our Jalandhar to Katra yatra. If you only need a drop to the hills and will return another way, see our one-way taxi from Jalandhar. NRI families planning a hill trip during a home visit can start with the NRI travel page, and anyone flying in to Mohali first can use the Chandigarh airport to Jalandhar pickup.
