Katra is the base town for the Mata Vaishno Devi yatra, and from Jalandhar it is a straight run north: about 260 km, usually 5 to 6 hours by car through Pathankot, Kathua and Jammu. Families from the Doaba make this trip all year round, for a mannat, after a wedding, or simply because the children have holidays. We drive you up, wait while you do the darshan, and bring you home.

Picking a plan

Most yatris choose one of three ways to do it. Decide this first, because it changes when you leave and which car makes sense.

  • Round trip with a night halt (most common): leave Jalandhar early, reach Katra by early afternoon, start the climb that evening or the next morning, and drive home after darshan. The car and driver stay in Katra while you are on the trek.
  • Two nights: for elderly parents or small children, an extra night in Katra lets everyone rest after the trek before the drive back.
  • One-way drop: if you are going on to Jammu or elsewhere afterwards, or coming back by train, we can do a single-direction drop to Katra.

Driver food and night stay are discussed when you book, along with tolls and any J&K entry formalities for the car, so you know the full plan before you leave.

The road, town by town

StretchWhat to expect
Jalandhar → PathankotNorth on the highway through Bhogpur, Dasuya and Mukerian. Busy with trucks, but flat and fast. Good tea stops along the way.
Pathankot → KathuaCross into Jammu & Kashmir at Lakhanpur. Any entry formalities for the car are handled by the driver; allow a short halt.
Kathua → JammuNH44 through Samba. Traffic thickens as you approach Jammu, especially in the evening.
Jammu → KatraThe last part climbs into the foothills. The road is good but winding in places; drivers take it steadily.

Leaving Jalandhar around 5 or 6 a.m. usually gets you to Katra by midday, with time to check in, eat and rest before you start. On the way back, start from Katra in daylight if you can; the hill section and Jammu traffic are easier before dark. In winter, fog in Punjab can slow the first part of the drive. Navratri and the summer school holidays bring the biggest crowds to Katra, so the last stretch into town can be slow then; book hotels and the car early for those weeks.

Yatra registration is your part

Every pilgrim needs a valid yatra registration (the RFID yatra card) before starting the trek from Katra. Getting it is the pilgrim's responsibility, not the taxi's. You can register online in advance or at the registration counters in Katra; rules and timings are set by the shrine board and can change, so check the current process before you travel. Carry photo ID for every adult in the group. Our driver will drop you as close to the registration and trek start point as vehicles are allowed and pick you up from the same area after darshan.

Which car for the yatra

The drive is long and part of it is in the hills, so legroom matters more than on a city run.

  • 2–4 people: Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios. Fine for a couple or a small family with light bags.
  • 5–7 people, or elderly parents: Innova Crysta, Toyota Innova or Mahindra Marazzo. Easier to get in and out of, and better on the hill section.
  • Extended family or a mohalla group: 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller. Many groups from Jalandhar's colonies and villages travel together this way.

All vehicles are air-conditioned, which you will want in June when Jammu is very hot, and the heater helps on winter mornings.

Adding a stop or two

Some families like to add a little more once they are in the area. Two options people ask about are Shiv Khori, a cave shrine beyond Katra, and Patnitop, the hill station on the Jammu–Srinagar side. Both add time and distance, so tell us at booking if you are interested and we will plan the days around them. Weather and road conditions decide what is sensible, especially in winter.

Other trips from Jalandhar

If the family prefers the hills to a pilgrimage, see our Himachal tours from Jalandhar, which include Dharamshala and Dalhousie, both close to the Pathankot side. For a single-direction drop, read about one-way taxis from Jalandhar. Families flying in from abroad for the yatra can start with the NRI airport pickup guide, and anyone catching a flight home straight after the yatra can look at our Jammu to Amritsar airport route.

Questions people ask about this trip

How long does the drive from Jalandhar to Katra take?

About 5 to 6 hours for roughly 260 km via Pathankot, Kathua and Jammu. Leaving around 5 or 6 a.m. usually gets you to Katra by midday.

Does the taxi wait in Katra while we do the darshan?

Yes, on a round trip the car and driver stay in Katra while you are on the trek and drive you home afterwards. The night halt arrangement is confirmed at booking.

Will the driver arrange our yatra registration card?

No, the RFID yatra registration is the pilgrim's own responsibility. You can register online in advance or at the counters in Katra; check the shrine board's current process before travelling.

Do we need to sort out anything for the taxi at the J&K border?

No. The car crosses into Jammu & Kashmir at Lakhanpur and any entry formalities for the vehicle are handled by us. They are discussed at booking along with tolls.

Can we add Shiv Khori or Patnitop to the trip?

Yes, both can be added as options. They add time and distance, so tell us at booking and we will plan the extra day around weather and road conditions.

Which vehicle is best for a family yatra with elderly parents?

An Innova Crysta, Innova or Marazzo gives more legroom and is easier to get in and out of. Larger groups can book a 12 or 17-seater Tempo Traveller.
