The road out of Jalandhar

We take the GT Road north-west out of the city, past Kartarpur, across the Beas river bridge at Beas, and on towards Amritsar. The airport is at Raja Sansi, about 11 km north-west of Amritsar city, so we do not need to go into the old city near the Golden Temple. The driver keeps to the outer roads and comes in on the airport side, which saves a lot of time on a busy evening.

The road is a four-lane highway for almost the whole way. The slow points are the stretch through Kartarpur town and the last part near Amritsar, where trucks and local traffic thicken up. Tolls and airport parking are settled with you at booking.

When to leave for your flight

• Gulf flights at night or early morning: plan to reach the terminal about 3 hours before departure. For a 4 am flight, leave Jalandhar by about 11:30 pm.
• Daytime domestic flights: 2 hours before departure is enough at the terminal, so start about 4 hours before take-off.
• December and January: fog on the GT Road between Kartarpur and Beas can be thick after midnight. Add at least an hour and let the driver keep a steady speed.
• Wedding season and Gurpurab days: the Amritsar side gets crowded; add 30 minutes.
