Flying abroad from Punjab? How to choose between Amritsar, Delhi and Chandigarh airports by drive time, connections, winter fog and luggage, with a town-by-town table.
If you live in Majha or Doaba and a sensible connection exists from Amritsar, fly from Amritsar: the airport is about 1h45 from Jalandhar against roughly 7 hours to Delhi. If your route only works through Delhi, or you want a direct long-haul flight, accept the long drive and plan it carefully. Families in Malwa and the Chandigarh belt have a third option, Chandigarh, which is often the shortest drive of all.
That is the short version. The longer version depends on where you are flying, how much luggage you carry, who is travelling, and the month. Below is how we think it through when a family calls us with a ticket half-booked.
The three airports Punjab actually uses
Amritsar (ATQ) is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Raja Sansi, about 11 km north-west of the city. It has international flights, mostly to the Gulf and some to Europe and South-East Asia, plus domestic flights. For Canada, the USA, the UK and Australia, most itineraries from Amritsar involve a connection, usually through a Gulf hub or through Delhi.
Delhi (DEL) is Indira Gandhi International Airport. Terminal 3 handles all international flights. It has by far the widest choice of airlines, departure times and direct long-haul routes, which is why so many Punjabi families still end up there despite the distance.
Chandigarh (IXC) is Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, on the Mohali side near Aerocity and Zirakpur. It is mainly domestic, with a small number of international flights to the Gulf. For long-haul travel it usually means a connection in Delhi or the Gulf.
How far each airport is from your town
Distance is where the decision usually starts. These are approximate road distances and normal drive times without long stops; fog, weddings, roadworks and city traffic can add a lot.
| Home town | Amritsar (ATQ) | Chandigarh (IXC) | Delhi (DEL) | Usually the first one to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amritsar city | about 11 km, under 30 min | about 230 km, 4h30 | about 460 km, 8h | Amritsar |
| Gurdaspur | about 90 km, 2h | about 230 km, 4h30 | long drive, similar to Amritsar | Amritsar |
| Pathankot | about 110 km, 2h30 | about 240 km, 4h45 | about 470 km, 8h30 | Amritsar |
| Kapurthala | about 75 km, 1h30 | about 170 km, 3h30 | about 390 km, 7h | Amritsar |
| Jalandhar | about 90 km, 1h45 | about 150 km, 3h | about 375 km, 7h | Amritsar, then Delhi |
| Hoshiarpur | about 120 km, 2h30 | about 150 km, 3h | about 380 km, 7h | Amritsar or Chandigarh |
| Phagwara | about 110 km, 2h | about 125 km, 2h30 | about 350 km, 6h30 | Amritsar or Chandigarh |
| Ludhiana | about 150 km, 3h | about 105 km, 2h15 | about 315 km, 6h | Chandigarh, then Delhi |
| Patiala | far, rarely used | about 65 km, 1h30 | about 250 km, 5h | Chandigarh or Delhi |
| Mohali / Chandigarh | about 235 km, 4h30 | 12 to 20 km, under 45 min | about 260 km, 5h | Chandigarh or Delhi |
| Bathinda | far, rarely used | about 215 km, 4h | long drive | Chandigarh or Delhi |
The pattern is simple. North of the Beas river, Amritsar wins on distance by a wide margin. Around Ludhiana and Phagwara, Chandigarh comes into play. South of Ludhiana, Delhi gets closer while Amritsar drifts out of reach.
Route options: direct flight or connection?
This is the factor that overrides distance more than any other. Delhi has the most direct long-haul flights to North America, the UK and Australia. From Amritsar there are fewer direct long-haul options, and many itineraries connect through the Gulf or through Delhi itself.
A connection is not automatically bad. A one-stop ticket from Amritsar via a Gulf hub can deliver you to Toronto or London in roughly the same total time as a long drive to Delhi plus a direct flight. What matters is the layover length and whether the bags are checked through to your final destination.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is it one ticket (one booking reference) all the way, or two separate tickets? Separate tickets mean you may have to collect and re-check bags, and a missed connection is your problem, not the airline's.
- How long is the layover? Very short connections at a big hub are risky, especially in winter.
- Does an Amritsar to Delhi domestic leg change terminals in Delhi? Many domestic flights use Terminal 1 while international flights leave from Terminal 3, so check how the transfer works on your ticket.
- Is there a transit visa requirement on the connecting route for your passport? Check with the airline or the embassy, not a travel agent's guess.
Door-to-door time, not flight time
Families often compare flight durations and forget the hours before take-off. For an international flight from Delhi, airlines advise reaching about 3 hours early. Add about 7 hours of road from Jalandhar and a meal stop, and you are leaving home 10 to 11 hours before departure. For a late-night flight from Delhi, that means leaving Jalandhar around midday.
From Jalandhar to Amritsar airport, the same 3-hour buffer plus about 1h45 of driving means leaving roughly 5 hours before departure. That saves most of a day, and more importantly it saves the tiredness. A grandparent who starts a 15-hour flight after an 8-hour car ride is not going to enjoy the trip.
Run the numbers both ways: total time from your front door to the arrival hall abroad. Sometimes the Amritsar option with one stop is genuinely shorter overall, and sometimes the direct Delhi flight wins even after the drive.
Winter fog changes the maths
From late December to the end of January, dense fog settles over the Punjab plains and the NH44 corridor to Delhi. It slows the road, and it delays or diverts flights at airports across North India, including Delhi, Amritsar and Chandigarh.
Fog hurts a long road trip more than a short one. Seven hours to Delhi can stretch well beyond that on a bad night, with the driver crawling behind trucks between Ludhiana and Panipat. On fog-season dates, a shorter drive to Amritsar or Chandigarh leaves less road for things to go wrong. If you must fly from Delhi in January, leave with a much bigger buffer than usual, and consider reaching Delhi the evening before for early-morning departures.
Check the airline's flight status before you leave home, and keep your phone charged in the car. Diversions and reschedules in fog season are usually announced by SMS or the airline app.
Luggage, students and big families
Long-haul tickets often allow two large checked bags per person. A family of four going to Canada can easily have eight suitcases plus cabin bags. That load decides the car before anything else: a sedan takes four passengers but limited luggage, while an Innova or Innova Crysta takes six or seven people with much more room. Larger groups or families travelling with relatives to see them off often need a Tempo Traveller.
Students flying out for the first time tend to over-pack. Weigh the bags at home against the airline allowance; it is cheaper and quicker to repack in the living room than at the check-in counter. On connecting itineraries, also confirm whether the connecting airline's allowance matches the first one, because it sometimes does not.
Thinking about cost without the guesswork
The cheapest air ticket is not always the cheapest trip. A Delhi fare may look lower, but compare the full picture: a longer road trip each way, a likely meal stop, sometimes a hotel night before an early flight, and the lost working day for whoever drives back. On the other side, a cheaper Amritsar fare with a long or awkward layover can cost you in airport food and exhaustion.
Return journeys matter too. Many NRI families arrive in Delhi because the inbound fare was good, then face a 7 to 8 hour drive home after a long-haul flight. If the return can come into Amritsar, the last leg is much shorter. Price both directions before deciding.
A quick decision guide
- Find your realistic routes from all three airports for your dates, including connections.
- Add road time from the table above, plus 3 hours for international check-in and a buffer for fog in winter.
- Compare total door-to-door time and how many times the bags change planes.
- Weigh who is travelling. Elderly parents, young children and first-time flyers benefit most from a shorter drive and fewer connections.
- Book the road leg once the flight is fixed, sharing the flight number so the pickup time is worked back from departure.
For most families who book airport runs with Jagvir Taxi Service from Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur and Pathankot, that process points to Amritsar more often than they expect. For Ludhiana and the south, Chandigarh or Delhi usually comes out ahead.
Getting to your chosen airport, and booking
Each airport has its own planning page. For trips into Raja Sansi, see our Amritsar airport taxi options from across Punjab, including the Jalandhar to Amritsar airport run and the drive from Pathankot. If you are going the long way, the Delhi airport page and the Jalandhar to Delhi airport guide cover leaving times for night flights. For Malwa and the tricity, start with Chandigarh airport transfers or the Ludhiana to Chandigarh airport route.
Arriving rather than departing? A driver can wait at Delhi arrivals for the ride home from Delhi airport to Jalandhar, and our taxi service for NRI families covers visits with several stops around Punjab.
To book, once your ticket is confirmed, call or WhatsApp Jagvir Taxi Service on +91 72680 42000 with the flight number, departure time, number of passengers and number of bags. We work out the pickup time from that, suggest the right car, and confirm tolls, parking and the quote before the trip; the driver's name and number reach you on WhatsApp beforehand. We run 24 hours, so late-night and early-morning airport departures are routine.
Frequently asked questions
Is Amritsar or Delhi airport better for flying from Jalandhar to Canada?
Amritsar is about 1h45 from Jalandhar against roughly 7 hours to Delhi, but Delhi has more direct long-haul flights. Compare total door-to-door time, including any connection, before deciding.
Are there direct long-haul flights from Amritsar airport?
Amritsar has international flights, mainly to the Gulf and some to Europe, but fewer direct long-haul options than Delhi. Many itineraries to Canada, the USA and Australia connect through a Gulf hub or Delhi, so check current schedules with the airline.
When should I leave Jalandhar for an international flight from Delhi?
Allow about 7 hours of driving plus a meal stop, and aim to reach Terminal 3 about 3 hours before departure. In practice that means leaving 10 to 11 hours before the flight, and more in winter fog.
Does fog affect Amritsar airport as well as Delhi?
Yes. From late December to January, fog can delay or divert flights across North India, including Amritsar, Delhi and Chandigarh. A shorter road leg to Amritsar simply leaves less room for road delays on top of flight delays.
Which airport is best for families in Ludhiana?
Chandigarh is about 2h15 from Ludhiana, Amritsar about 3 hours and Delhi about 6 hours. For international travel, many Ludhiana families still fly from Delhi for the direct options, or connect from Chandigarh.
Which car do I need for an airport trip with heavy international luggage?
A sedan suits four passengers with light luggage. For families carrying two large suitcases each, an Innova or Innova Crysta is the safer choice, and a Tempo Traveller suits bigger groups seeing someone off.
