Landing at Delhi T3 and heading home to Punjab? Step by step from immigration and customs to meeting your driver, the Murthal stop and drive times to your town.
After landing at Delhi T3 from abroad, plan on clearing immigration, collecting your bags and walking out through customs before you meet your driver at the arrivals pickup area. The drive home to Punjab then takes about 6 hours to Ludhiana, 7 hours to Jalandhar or Hoshiarpur and 8 hours to Amritsar, plus a meal stop. A little preparation before you board the flight makes the whole thing far easier, especially with elderly parents or small children.
What to send your taxi operator before you fly
The single most useful thing you can do happens before you leave home abroad. Send one clear WhatsApp message with everything the operator needs, so nobody has to chase details while you are in the air:
- Flight number and date, and the scheduled landing time in Delhi (Indian time, not your home time).
- Terminal, if your ticket shows it. International arrivals land at T3.
- Number of passengers, with ages of any children and whether anyone needs extra help walking.
- Number of large suitcases, cabin bags and any cartons or odd-sized items such as a pram or wheelchair.
- Full drop address in Punjab, with a landmark and a local family member's phone number.
- Whether you want a stop on the way, such as a relative's house or a meal at Murthal.
- The WhatsApp number you will use after landing, especially if your foreign number may not work.
Ask for the driver's name, mobile number and car number before you fly, and share them with family at home. A child seat is worth requesting in advance if you need one, rather than assuming it will be there.
Inside T3: immigration, baggage and customs
Immigration
Follow the arrival signs to immigration. Indian passport holders and foreign passport holders, including OCI cardholders, usually queue in separate lines, so check the signs carefully. Keep passports, OCI cards and any visa documents together in one bag that one adult carries. Queues vary a lot depending on how many long-haul flights land at the same time, and the early-morning bank of arrivals can be busy.
Baggage
Screens after immigration show which belt your flight is on. Grab trolleys first, one per two or three big bags. Count your suitcases before you leave the belt area; it is much easier to report a missing bag at the airline's baggage desk inside than after you have walked out.
Customs
Most families walk through the green channel with personal belongings. If you are carrying anything that needs declaring, such as larger amounts of currency, gold, or expensive new electronics beyond the allowance, use the red channel. The rules and allowances change, so check the current guidance from Indian customs before you travel rather than relying on what a relative remembers.
Getting your phone working
Your driver will contact you on WhatsApp, so you need data the moment you land. There are a few ways to manage it:
- Turn on international roaming with your home carrier before departure, even just for the first day.
- Buy an eSIM for India before you fly, if your phone supports it.
- Keep an old Indian SIM active and swap it in on the plane.
- Use the airport Wi-Fi, which usually needs an OTP sent to a phone number, so it is not ideal if your number has no signal.
If none of these work, tell the operator in advance. The driver can still meet you at the agreed spot with your name, and family in Punjab can relay calls.
Meeting the driver outside arrivals
Once you walk out of customs you are in the public arrivals area, where people wait for passengers. Message the driver as soon as you have your bags; he will share his live location on WhatsApp and tell you where to stand. Depending on airport rules on the day, he either meets you at the arrivals exit or asks you to walk to the pickup zone where the car can stop.
Do not accept offers from anyone who walks up and says they are your driver unless the name and number match what you were sent. Stay with your bags, and if the driver is a few minutes away bringing the car round, wait inside the arrivals area rather than wandering with trolleys.
If the flight lands early or late
Flights from North America often land well ahead of schedule thanks to tailwinds, and flights from Europe can sit in a holding pattern over Delhi on a busy morning. This is why the flight number matters more than the printed landing time. With it, Jagvir Taxi Service can follow the actual arrival and the driver adjusts, so he is neither waiting hours for a late flight nor caught out by an early landing.
The same process runs in more detail on our Delhi airport to Jalandhar taxi page, which also covers which car fits which amount of luggage.
How long is the drive home?
Every Delhi airport to Punjab taxi heads north out of the city to NH44 and passes Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal and Ambala before crossing into Punjab near Shambhu. These are the usual times without long stops:
| Destination | Approx. distance from the airport | Approx. drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Ludhiana | about 315 km | about 6 hours |
| Jalandhar | about 375 km | about 7 hours |
| Hoshiarpur | about 380 km | about 7 hours, via Phagwara or Jalandhar |
| Amritsar | about 460 km | about 8 hours |
Add 30 to 60 minutes for a proper meal, more if you land in the evening rush when Delhi traffic is slow. In December and January, fog can add several hours, especially at night.
The Murthal stop
Murthal, just past Sonipat on NH44, is where most drivers heading to Punjab pull in. The dhabas there stay open late into the night and are the first good place for parathas, chai and a clean washroom. It is close enough to Delhi that you will reach it after an hour or two, depending on traffic, which suits most arrivals well.
If anyone has a sensitive stomach after a long flight, keep the first meal simple. You can always make a second, shorter stop further up the highway near Karnal or Ambala.
Looking after jet-lagged parents and kids
Elderly passengers
Older travellers have often been awake for a full day by the time they land. Ask for wheelchair assistance through the airline when booking the ticket; staff take them through immigration and baggage and hand them over at the exit. In the car, the front seat is usually the most comfortable for them, with the seat reclined and a small pillow.
- Keep their daily medicines in the cabin bag, not the suitcase, along with any prescriptions.
- Give them water regularly; flights are dehydrating and the car's air-conditioning adds to it.
- Ask the driver for a short leg-stretch every two to three hours, which helps circulation after the flight.
Children
Children often fall asleep within minutes of the car starting. A larger car such as an Innova Crysta lets them lie across the back row. Pack a small bag with snacks, a change of clothes, wipes and a charged tablet, and keep it out of the boot.
The adults
Resist the urge to drive yourself after a long-haul flight. Jet lag dulls reactions, and NH44 at night carries heavy truck traffic. Let someone else drive the first day.
Landing at Amritsar instead
If your airline has a good connection into Amritsar, compare it before booking. Arriving there puts Jalandhar under two hours away by road, and our Amritsar airport to Jalandhar taxi page covers that route. When a domestic connection to Adampur, just outside Jalandhar, is running and suits your timings, that is another option; see the Adampur airport taxi page. For other towns, the Delhi airport taxi hub lists every route, including the Hoshiarpur to Delhi airport taxi and the Amritsar to Delhi airport cab for the trip back when your holiday ends.
Booking your pickup
Jagvir Taxi Service handles Delhi airport pickups for families heading to all parts of Punjab, at any hour. WhatsApp or call +91 72680 42000 with the details from the list above, and the driver's name and number will reach you before your flight. Families who visit regularly can find more on our NRI taxi service page, and every contact option is on the contact page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get out of Delhi T3 after an international flight?
It varies with how many flights land together. Immigration, baggage and customs can be quick on a quiet night but take well over an hour at busy times, so plan your pickup with that margin and keep the driver updated on WhatsApp.
Where will my driver meet me at Delhi airport?
In the public arrivals area after you exit customs, or at the pickup zone where cars can stop, depending on the airport's rules that day. The driver shares his live location on WhatsApp and tells you exactly where to stand.
What if my flight to Delhi is delayed?
Share your flight number when booking so the pickup can follow the actual landing time. If you miss a connection abroad, send the new flight details on WhatsApp as soon as you can.
How long is the drive from Delhi airport to Jalandhar or Amritsar?
About 7 hours to Jalandhar (roughly 375 km) and about 8 hours to Amritsar (roughly 460 km), plus a meal stop. Fog in December and January can add several hours.
Can we stop for food on the way from Delhi airport to Punjab?
Yes. Most families stop at the Murthal dhabas on NH44 near Sonipat, which stay open late, and a second short break near Karnal or Ambala is easy to add.
My phone will not work in India when I land. How will I contact the driver?
Tell the operator in advance and share a family member's number in Punjab. Turning on roaming, buying an India eSIM before you fly, or using the airport Wi-Fi are the usual fixes.
