Fog Season Airport Travel in Punjab: Taxi Timing and Safety Tips

Flying in December or January? How fog on NH44 slows the drive to Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar airports, how much extra time to add, and when to leave a day early.

In December and January, dense fog on NH44 and the GT Road can turn a 7-hour drive to Delhi airport into a 9 or 10-hour one, mostly at night and in the early morning. If you have a flight in this season, add roughly 2 to 3 hours to a Delhi run and about an hour to a Chandigarh or Amritsar run, and check your flight status before you leave home. For very early flights from Delhi, many families leave the evening before rather than driving through the worst hours.

What the fog actually does to the highway

Winter fog across Punjab and Haryana settles in the evening and is usually thickest from late night until mid-morning. On bad nights, visibility on NH44 can drop to a few metres, and the open stretches between towns, where fields run right up to the road, are often the worst. It can be patchy too: clear in Jalandhar, a white wall near Khanna, clear again at Ambala.

The road itself doesn't change, but everything on it slows down. Cars crawl behind truck tail-lights, drivers miss turns and exits, and the service lanes near towns fill with vehicles that have pulled over to wait. A trip that normally needs only a meal stop can involve long stretches at walking pace.

The months to plan around

The heaviest fog usually falls between mid-December and late January, with some foggy mornings in early December and February. Not every day is foggy, and that is the trap: one clear week makes people forget the buffer, and then a thick night arrives the day they fly.

Why night driving gets so much slower

Fog at night is harder to drive through than fog in daylight. Headlights bounce back off the water droplets, so the driver sees a bright haze rather than the road. Lane markings disappear, and a stationary truck or a tractor without proper lights can appear with very little warning.

Most Delhi flights to North America and Europe leave in the small hours, which means a Punjab family is usually on the road exactly when fog is thickest. That is why the extra time we suggest for a night run is larger than for a daytime one.

Extra time to add, route by route

These are the buffers we suggest during December and January, on top of the normal drive time and the usual check-in margin of about 3 hours for international and 2 hours for domestic flights. They are practical estimates, not guarantees; on the worst nights you may need more.

Leaving the evening before

For a flight that departs between about 5 AM and 10 AM from Delhi, the honest choice is often to travel the previous afternoon or evening, before the fog thickens, and stay at a hotel near the airport or with relatives in Delhi NCR. You reach the airport rested, and a bad fog night costs you sleep rather than your flight.

This makes most sense for:

  • Families from Amritsar, Pathankot and the Majha side, where the drive is already 8 hours or more.
  • Elderly passengers, for whom an all-night drive followed by a long-haul flight is very tiring.
  • Anyone on a non-refundable ticket or a tight connection abroad, where missing the flight has a big cost.

If you decide to drive through the night anyway, leave earlier rather than later. Reaching T3 an hour or two early and waiting inside is far better than watching the clock at Panipat.

How careful drivers handle fog

You should not have to tell a driver how to handle fog, but it helps to know what good practice looks like, and to speak up if you are not comfortable.

  • Speed to match visibility. The rule is simple: drive slowly enough to stop within the distance you can see. On a thick night that can mean 20 to 30 km/h for long stretches.
  • Low beam, not high beam. High beam reflects off the fog and blinds the driver. Low beam and fog lamps, where fitted, light the road surface better.
  • Hazard lights used sensibly. Hazard lights are essential when the car is stopped or pulled over on the shoulder. While moving, many drivers prefer normal tail-lights, because a line of flashing hazards makes it hard to tell who is moving, braking or parked.
  • Long following distance. Keep well back from the vehicle ahead, so sudden braking does not cause a chain collision.
  • No overtaking trucks. Overtaking a slow truck in fog means driving blind into a lane you cannot see. A good driver stays patient behind it.
  • Stopping safely if it gets too thick. If visibility goes to almost nothing, pull well off the road at a dhaba, a fuel station or a lit area, never on the highway shoulder, and wait.

Passengers can help too: keep the cabin quiet in thick stretches, and do not push the driver to make up time. A flight can be rebooked; an accident cannot be undone.

Check your flight status before you leave

Fog delays flights as well as cars. Before you leave home, and again on the way, check the airline's app or website, or the flight status on the airport's own site. Make sure the airline has your current mobile number and email, since delay and cancellation messages go there first.

If the flight is pushed back by several hours, you can leave later or take a longer meal break. If it is cancelled, you avoid a wasted all-night drive. Share any change with your taxi operator straight away so the pickup time can move. If you have booked with Jagvir Taxi Service, a WhatsApp message with the new departure time is enough, and we will rework the leaving time with you.

Fog at Chandigarh and Amritsar airports

Delhi airport is equipped for low-visibility landings, though heavy fog still causes delays and occasional cancellations there. The smaller airports in the region, including Chandigarh and Amritsar, have historically seen more fog-related delays, diversions and cancellations, especially for morning flights in peak winter.

In practice that means a morning domestic flight from Chandigarh in January is less predictable than an afternoon one. If you have a choice, an afternoon departure from Chandigarh or Amritsar is often more reliable. If you are connecting to an international flight in Delhi, leave a generous gap between the two, or consider driving to Delhi instead. The Chandigarh airport taxi and Amritsar airport taxi hub pages list drive times from each town, while the long runs south are gathered on the Delhi airport taxi from Punjab page.

If your flight is diverted

When a flight cannot land at Chandigarh or Amritsar because of fog, it may be sent to Delhi or another airport. If family is waiting to collect you, keep them updated, because the pickup may need to move to a different city.

Fog-season checklist

  1. Look up the normal drive time for your route and add the buffer from the table above.
  2. For an early-morning Delhi flight, consider travelling the evening before.
  3. Check the flight status before leaving home and again on the road.
  4. Keep phones charged and carry a power bank; slow traffic means a longer trip.
  5. Carry warm clothes, a blanket, water and snacks in the car, not the boot.
  6. Keep medicines and travel documents in a cabin bag within reach.
  7. Agree on a stop plan with the driver, and accept that a pause to let thick fog lift is sometimes the right call.

Booking a winter airport run

Jagvir Taxi Service drives these routes through the whole winter, including overnight Delhi runs. Call or WhatsApp +91 72680 42000 with your flight time and we will suggest a fog-season leaving time for your town, such as the Jalandhar to Delhi airport run or the shorter Jalandhar to Amritsar airport trip. Frequently asked questions

How much extra time should I allow for fog when driving from Punjab to Delhi airport?

In December and January, add roughly 2 to 3 hours to the normal drive from Ludhiana, Jalandhar or Hoshiarpur, and 3 hours or more from Amritsar or Pathankot. Night runs need the most margin because fog is usually thickest then.

When is fog worst on NH44 in Punjab and Haryana?

Usually from mid-December to late January, and mostly from late night until mid-morning. It is often patchy, so one stretch can be clear while the next is very thick.

Should we travel the day before an early-morning flight from Delhi in winter?

For flights leaving between about 5 AM and 10 AM, travelling the previous afternoon or evening and staying near the airport is often the safer choice, especially from Amritsar or Pathankot, or with elderly passengers.

Do flights from Chandigarh and Amritsar get delayed by fog?

Yes, morning flights in peak winter are the most affected, and some are delayed, diverted or cancelled. Check the flight status with the airline before leaving home and again on the way.

Is it safe to drive at night in fog to the airport?

It can be done safely at a slow speed with low beam, a long following distance and no overtaking of trucks, and by pulling off at a lit place if visibility drops to almost nothing. Building in enough time is what keeps the driver from feeling rushed.

What should I do if my flight is delayed because of fog after I have booked a taxi?

Tell the taxi operator as soon as the airline informs you, so the pickup time can be moved. If the flight is cancelled before you leave, you save yourself an unnecessary overnight drive.
