From Malerkotla the airport is closer than many people expect. Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (IXC) is about 100 km away, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes by car, and the road is straightforward: Ahmedgarh, Khanna, Sirhind, then across to the Mohali side.
The route, stage by stage
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Malerkotla to Ahmedgarh | Short run north; town traffic at the start, especially on market days. |
| Ahmedgarh to Khanna | Mostly open road through farmland, joining NH44 near Khanna. |
| Khanna to Sirhind | Highway driving; Khanna has one of the biggest grain mandis in the region, so expect trucks in the procurement season. |
| Sirhind to the airport | Cross-country towards Landran and the airport road. Slower in the evening as you get closer to Mohali and Zirakpur. |
Total: about 100 km and around 2 hours 15 minutes. Late-night and early-morning runs are usually quicker. If there is a jam near Sirhind, the driver can go via Ludhiana–Samrala–Kharar instead, though that is longer.
About the pickup side
Malerkotla became a separate district of Punjab in 2021, and we treat the whole new district as our pickup area: Malerkotla town, Ahmedgarh, Amargarh and the villages in between. We also come to the Kup Kalan side if that is where you live. The bus stand and railway station are easy meeting points if you are staying with someone and do not want the car coming into a narrow lane.
There is a nice link with the road you will take. Malerkotla's Nawab is remembered in Sikh history for speaking out against the execution of the younger Sahibzade at Sirhind, and the same Sirhind is where your car turns towards the airport. Visitors flying in sometimes ask to stop at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib on the way into Malerkotla, which adds very little to the drive.
The old town has tight streets. If your house is inside them, tell us when booking, and the driver will either come to the nearest wide road or call you first.
Who flies out of Chandigarh from Malerkotla
A good part of our work here is families with relatives working in the UAE, who use the direct Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah flights from IXC. The rest are domestic flyers heading to Mumbai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad for work or study, plus traders and their families. Because the drive is only a little over two hours, many people book a return trip on the same day to see a relative off and come home.
Timing your departure
For a domestic flight, aim to be at IXC 2 hours before departure; for an international one, 3 hours. With a 2 hour 15 minute drive and a small buffer:
- 7:00 am domestic – leave Malerkotla around 2:30 am
- 1:00 pm domestic – leave around 8:30 am
- Gulf flight at 10:00 am – leave around 4:30 am
In fog season, add an hour.
Choosing a car
Gulf workers often fly with heavy cartons on top of their suitcases. If that is you, skip the sedan and take an Innova, Innova Crysta or Marazzo, which has 6 to 7 seats and a deep boot. A single traveller or a small family with a couple of bags is fine in a Dzire, Amaze or Etios (4 seats). A bigger party, for example a family going to receive someone, can share a Tempo Traveller (12 or 17 seats). Every vehicle has AC.
Arrivals from IXC to Malerkotla
Booking a pickup from the airport works the other way round: give us the flight number, and we time the car to your actual landing rather than the scheduled one. A WhatsApp message with the driver's details arrives ahead of the trip, so you can ring him once you have collected your bags. Home is about 2 hours 15 minutes away, a bit more if the Kharar or Landran junctions are busy.

Close by, we cover the same airport from Sangrur, Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib, the last of which you pass on the way. The full list is on the Chandigarh airport cab hub. Prefer to book online? Use our online booking page.
