From Hoshiarpur you do not need NH44 at all to reach Chandigarh airport. The usual line runs east along the foothills through Garhshankar, Balachaur and Ropar, then down to Kharar and the airport. It is about 150 km and roughly 3 hours.
The foothill road, stage by stage
- Hoshiarpur to Garhshankar – out of the city towards the south-east, through farmland at the edge of the Shivaliks.
- Garhshankar to Balachaur – a quieter stretch; at night there is little traffic but also few open shops, so we fuel up before leaving.
- Balachaur to Ropar – the road crosses into Rupnagar district and reaches the Sutlej at Ropar.
- Ropar to Kurali and Kharar – busier; this is where trucks and town traffic slow things down.
- Kharar to the airport – onto the airport road on the Mohali side, near Aerocity.
Travellers from the Dasuya or Mukerian end of the district sometimes find it quicker to come down through Jalandhar and Phagwara to NH44 instead. The driver will suggest the better option for your village.
Kandi villages and the hills side
Hoshiarpur district has a long Kandi belt, the dry, hilly strip below the Shivalik foothills. Many of our pickups are from these villages, where lanes are narrow and mobile signal can drop. Two things help:
- Send a WhatsApp location pin the day before, not just the village name.
- Tell us if the last part of the road is kachha or steep, so we do not send a low car with a full load.
In the monsoon the seasonal streams, the choes, that come down from the hills can cross low roads. If heavy rain is forecast for your travel day, we may suggest a slightly earlier start or a different approach road.
Who flies from Hoshiarpur via Chandigarh
Hoshiarpur is part of the Doaba, and like the rest of the region it has a large NRI population. Families fly to the Gulf and connect onward to Canada, the UK and beyond, while domestic travellers head to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. Students leaving for study abroad and returning visitors are a big part of our calendar around the winter wedding season.
Start times that work
Allow about 5½ hours before a domestic departure and 6½ hours before an international one. For a 7 a.m. flight that means leaving Hoshiarpur around 1:30 a.m. In fog season, December and January, the foothill road can be very thick early in the morning, so add another 30–45 minutes.
Cars for the trip
NRI families usually have the most luggage of anyone we carry. For three or more large suitcases, choose a Toyota Innova, Innova Crysta or Mahindra Marazzo. Two people with lighter bags will be fine in a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios. Wedding guests and large families can book a 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller. All have air conditioning.
Flying back in
The same foothill road works in reverse for arrivals. Share your flight number and the driver waits at Chandigarh arrivals, then heads up through Kharar, Ropar and Garhshankar to your door. Families returning from overseas usually land tired after a Gulf connection, so the driver keeps a steady pace and stops wherever you want for food. If you land after dark and live deep in the Kandi area, describe the last stretch of road when you book.
Pickups across the district
Hoshiarpur city, the bus stand and railway station, Mahilpur, Garhshankar, Tanda, Dasuya, Mukerian and villages in between. Our base is in Jalandhar, about an hour away, so for a night start it helps to book a day ahead.
