Rupnagar (Ropar) to Chandigarh Airport Taxi Service

Since IIT Ropar opened its campus on the banks of the Sutlej, a large share of our Ropar airport work has been students, faculty and visiting researchers. Rupnagar is the closest district town in this part of Punjab to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (IXC): about 45 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes via Kurali.

For IIT Ropar students and visitors

• Tell us the hostel or the campus gate you will use; the driver waits at the gate if he cannot enter.
• Semester-end and exam-week flights are the busiest days. Book a day or two ahead.
• Several students on similar flights can share one Innova or Marazzo, or a Tempo Traveller for a bigger group.
• Visiting faculty landing at IXC can be met at arrivals and dropped at the campus guest house.
• Send the flight number, not just the time, so the driver can follow any delay.

Ropar – Kurali – airport road

The route is short and direct. From Ropar the car crosses towards Kurali, continues to the Kharar side, and comes down to the airport road on the Mohali side near Aerocity. Kurali and Kharar are both busy market towns, and Kharar in particular gets congested in the morning and evening. Outside those hours, you are often at the terminal in about an hour.

A town on the river

Ropar grew up where the Sutlej comes out of the Shivalik foothills onto the plains, and the river shapes the town: the headworks, the wetland that draws migratory birds in winter, and the thermal power plant all sit along it. For our drivers it mostly means one thing. Winter mornings by the river can be foggy even when Kharar is clear, so on December and January runs we leave a little earlier from addresses close to the water.

Pickup across Rupnagar district

Beyond the town itself, the bus stand and the railway station, we collect from Kurali, Morinda and Chamkaur Sahib, and further up the Sutlej from Kiratpur Sahib, Anandpur Sahib and Nangal. The upstream towns add drive time, so mention them when booking. Families living near the headworks or the thermal plant colony should share a WhatsApp location pin to be safe.

Leaving for a flight

Domestic flights: be at IXC about 2 hours before. International (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah): about 3 hours before. With a drive of around 1 hour 10 minutes and some buffer:

Choosing the car

The Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze and Toyota Etios each take 4 passengers and suit most students and single travellers. Families with big suitcases need the extra boot of an Innova, Innova Crysta or Marazzo, each of which seats six or seven. Student groups, and pilgrims heading on to Anandpur Sahib after landing, can fill the 12-seat or 17-seat Tempo Traveller. All of them are air-conditioned.

Arriving at Chandigarh

For an incoming flight, the number on your ticket is what we plan around. The driver's details reach you on WhatsApp before the trip, and since the drive back is barely an hour, you could be in Ropar while the rest of your flight is still waiting for taxis. Pilgrims landing at IXC often ask to go straight on to Kiratpur Sahib or Anandpur Sahib; that is easy to arrange from here.
