In Nawanshahr district, the airport run is often a family event. Half the village comes to see someone off, the suitcases are packed to the last kilo, and the flight connects through the Gulf to Canada, the UK or Europe. Chandigarh airport is about 105 km away, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes, which makes it the nearest major airport for most of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Packing the car for an NRI departure
Banga, Rahon, Nawanshahr and the villages around them have some of the highest numbers of overseas families in Punjab. That shapes how we plan these trips:
- Count the bags, not the people. Four passengers with eight check-in suitcases need an Innova Crysta or Marazzo, not a sedan.
- Weigh at home. Airlines are strict at Chandigarh; repacking at the counter wastes the time you left for check-in.
- Passports and printouts in hand luggage, not in the boot under six suitcases.
- Elderly parents flying alone? Tell us. The driver can help them as far as the terminal entrance and make sure the trolley is loaded.
- Seeing-off party? A 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller takes the family to the airport and brings them home together.
One more thing we see often: if your flight from Chandigarh to the Gulf and your onward flight to Canada or Europe are on separate tickets, the baggage allowance can differ between the two. Check both before you pack. The lower limit is the one that catches people at the counter.
The road: Balachaur, Ropar, Kharar
From Nawanshahr the car heads east to Balachaur, then on to Ropar, where the road meets the Sutlej. From Ropar it runs south through Kurali to Kharar and onto the airport road near Aerocity. There is no NH44 driving on this trip, which keeps it free of the big Ludhiana jams. The slow points are town crossings: Ropar in the morning and Kharar in the evening.
Pickups from the Banga side usually come into Nawanshahr first and follow the same road.
A note on Khatkar Kalan
Khatkar Kalan, near Banga, is the ancestral village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, and the district is named after him. Visitors who fly into Chandigarh to see the memorial and museum there often book us for the round trip from the airport. If you would like to stop on the way back, tell us at booking so we plan the time.
Leaving at the right hour
| Flight type | Leave home about | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic | 4½ hours before departure | 2:30 a.m. for a 7 a.m. flight |
| International (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah) | 5½ hours before departure | 4:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. flight |
From late December into January, fog around Balachaur and Ropar can be heavy before sunrise. We may ask you to start 30–45 minutes earlier.
