Amritsar has its own international airport, so why would anyone drive about 230 km to Chandigarh to catch a flight? More often than you would think. The trip takes roughly 4½ hours down the GT Road, and the people who book it usually have a clear reason.

Why travellers leave Amritsar for a Chandigarh flight

  • Pilgrims on a round trip. Many visitors fly into Chandigarh, travel up to the Golden Temple for darshan, and then return to Chandigarh because their return ticket is booked from there.
  • Flight timing. Sometimes the only direct flight to a particular city on your day, or at a sensible hour, leaves from Chandigarh.
  • A combined trip. Families who also want to visit relatives in Mohali or Chandigarh, or stop at Anandpur Sahib or Fatehgarh Sahib, end the trip near the airport anyway.
  • Tour groups who have done Wagah border and the old city and are moving on to Himachal or Delhi via Chandigarh.

If none of these apply, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Raja Sansi, about 11 km from the city, is almost always simpler. Check both before you book.

Picking up near the Golden Temple

The lanes around Sri Harmandir Sahib are crowded and parts of the approach are closed to cars, so we cannot always stop at the hotel door. When booking, tell us your hotel or sarai. We will agree a pickup point the car can reach, and the driver will call when he is there. Elsewhere in the city we come to the door: Lawrence Road, Ranjit Avenue, the railway station, the bus stand, and homes in villages around Amritsar.

The drive, town by town

Out of Amritsar on the GT Road, past Jandiala Guru, across the Beas river near the Radha Soami Dera, through Kartarpur and around Jalandhar. Then Phagwara, the Ladhowal toll, and Ludhiana. After Ludhiana the driver takes either the Samrala–Kharar road or continues to Khanna and crosses at Sirhind. The last few kilometres are on the airport road on the Mohali side.

Passengers sometimes want to break the journey for a gurdwara visit along the highway, or for a proper meal at a dhaba rather than a quick tea. That is fine. Tell us at booking so the extra time is built into your start time, rather than squeezed out of your check-in window.

Our base is in Jalandhar, roughly the halfway mark. That is useful if anything goes wrong on the road, because a backup car can reach you faster.

When to set off

Departure from IXCLeave Amritsar
Morning domestic flight (8 a.m.)Around 12:30 a.m.
Afternoon domestic flight (2 p.m.)Around 6:30 a.m., after early darshan if you like
International flightAbout 8 hours before departure

That includes a short stop for tea or a meal; we usually stop once, near Jalandhar or Ludhiana. In winter fog, the GT Road between Amritsar and Ludhiana can be very slow at night, so add 45 minutes to an hour.

Which vehicle

For a 4½-hour drive, comfort matters more than on a short airport hop. A couple can go in a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios. A family of five or six, especially with elders, will be more comfortable in a Toyota Innova, Innova Crysta or Mahindra Marazzo. Pilgrim groups travelling together book the 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller. All cars have AC.

Call or WhatsApp +91 72680 42000. Share the flight number and time, where you are staying in Amritsar, and how many people and bags. We confirm the car and the quote in advance, including tolls and parking, and send the driver's name and number on WhatsApp before pickup.

Questions people ask about this trip

How long is the drive from Amritsar to Chandigarh airport?

About 4½ hours for roughly 230 km on the GT Road, plus a short stop. Winter fog can add an hour at night.

Can you pick us up from a hotel near the Golden Temple?

Yes. Some lanes near the temple are closed to cars, so we agree a reachable pickup point and the driver calls when he arrives.

Why not just fly from Amritsar airport?

Often that is the better choice. People drive to Chandigarh when their return ticket is from there or Chandigarh has the flight time they need.

When should we leave Amritsar for an 8 a.m. flight from Chandigarh?

Around 12:30 a.m. for a domestic flight. Leave earlier in December and January.

Can a pilgrim group travel together?

Yes. A 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller carries the group and luggage in one vehicle.

Do you stop for food on the way?

Yes, usually once near Jalandhar or Ludhiana. Tell the driver if you need more stops.
