Amritsar to Delhi is one of the longer runs we do: about 450 km and roughly 8 hours to the edge of Delhi, before you add the time to reach a Gurugram office or a Noida flat. Because of that, the start time matters more than anything else on this trip. Get it right and you arrive fresh; get it wrong and you sit in Delhi's evening traffic after a full day in the car.
Plan the clock first
Work backwards from the time you need to be at your door in NCR. Allow about 8 hours to reach Delhi, then about 30 to 90 minutes more depending on the area. A few examples from trips we run often:
- Visa or embassy appointment in Delhi at 10 am: leave Amritsar around midnight to 1 am.
- Hospital check-in at AIIMS or Medanta around noon: a 2 to 3 am start.
- Evening family function in Noida or Ghaziabad: leave by 6 am so you clear Delhi before the 5 pm rush.
The one thing we try to avoid is reaching Delhi between about 5 and 9 pm. The last 30 km can take as long as the previous 100.
Who travels from Amritsar to NCR
A good share of our Amritsar bookings are actually visitors going home. Families from Delhi, Gurugram and Noida come for darshan at the Golden Temple, often add a trip to the Attari border for the evening ceremony, and then want a car back to their own front door rather than a train to a Delhi station. We pick them up from their hotel near the Golden Temple or on Lawrence Road and drop them at home.
Local families book the other way for visa appointments, for treatment at Delhi hospitals, and for weddings in NCR. Traders and business owners from the city use the car to reach meetings in Gurugram and Noida without changing trains.
Pickups across Amritsar
Hotels and dharamshalas around the Golden Temple, Ranjit Avenue, Lawrence Road, the railway station, the bus stand, and houses in nearby villages. If you are staying in the walled city where lanes are narrow, the driver will tell you the nearest point the car can reach.
The road south
From Amritsar the car joins the GT Road and stays on it: Beas, Jalandhar, Phagwara, Ludhiana, Khanna, Rajpura, then into Haryana near Shambhu, and on through Ambala, Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat. The Murthal dhabas near Sonipat are the usual breakfast or lunch stop. On a run this long, plan for two short breaks as well, one around Ludhiana and one at Murthal.
After Sonipat the driver chooses the route for your address. Gurugram is often reached via the KMP side so the car does not cross the whole city. Noida and Ghaziabad are on the eastern side. Central and south Delhi go straight in on the GT Road.
Which vehicle for which group
Eight hours is a long time in a small car. Two people with a couple of bags are fine in a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios. A family of five or six, or anyone going for treatment, will be much happier in a Toyota Innova, Innova Crysta or Mahindra Marazzo. Groups returning from a Golden Temple visit often take the 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller. All cars are air-conditioned.
Round trips and stays in Delhi
A same-day Amritsar–Delhi–Amritsar trip is about 16 hours of driving, so we normally suggest a night halt in NCR and a return the next morning. If you have several stops, such as a visa centre in Delhi and then a relative's house in Faridabad, tell us at booking so the driver can plan the order. Interstate permits, tolls and parking are discussed at the time of booking, and you get a confirmed quote before we start.

Questions people ask about this trip
We are visiting the Golden Temple from Gurugram. Can you drop us home?
Yes. We pick you up from your hotel near the Golden Temple or anywhere in Amritsar and drop you at your door in Gurugram, Noida, Delhi or elsewhere in NCR.
Can we see the Attari border ceremony and then leave for Delhi?
You can, but the ceremony ends in the evening and you would then drive about 8 hours overnight. Many families prefer to see Attari, sleep in Amritsar and leave early the next morning.
What time should I leave Amritsar for a 10 am visa appointment in Delhi?
Around midnight to 1 am. That allows roughly 8 hours of driving, a short break at Murthal, and time to get to the appointment area.
Is a same-day return from Delhi possible?
It means about 16 hours of driving in a day, so we usually suggest a night halt in NCR and returning the next morning.
How long does it take to reach Noida compared with central Delhi?
Allow roughly 30 to 90 minutes extra for Noida or Ghaziabad after reaching Delhi's edge, depending on the time of day.
Do you handle permits for Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh?
Yes. Permits, tolls and parking are discussed and confirmed when you book.
