Even so, a steady stream of Mohali families and students book a car to Delhi instead, because the flight they need leaves from Terminal 3. The drive is roughly 265 km and about 5 hours.

Mohali and the areas around Kharar are full of young people preparing for study abroad, and when the visa comes through the flight is almost always out of Delhi. Families visiting children overseas

Retired parents from Mohali's phases and sectors flying to Canada, Australia or the UK make up a big share of our bookings. They usually want a smooth ride, a washroom stop on the way and help with the bags at the terminal.

People from the IT and office parks sometimes find the flight timing or the connection they need only works from Delhi. These trips are often a sedan, one bag and a laptop.

Why not just use the airport in Mohali?

Pickups around Mohali

The route south

From Mohali the car usually takes Airport Road to Zirakpur and then the highway to Ambala, where it joins NH44. Zirakpur's traffic is the main variable; at office hours it can add real time, so we build that in for evening pickups. After Ambala it is Karnal, Panipat and Sonipat, with Murthal as the obvious break before Delhi. The approach to the airport depends on the time of day.

Departure planning

Airlines want international passengers at Terminal 3 about 3 hours before departure, and domestic passengers about 2 hours. From Mohali, allow roughly 6 to 6 and a half hours from pickup to terminal. Some worked examples:

• Flight at 1:30 AM to Toronto or Vancouver: pickup around 4:30 to 5 PM.
• Flight at 4 AM to London or Melbourne: pickup around 7 to 7:30 PM.
• Domestic flight at 10 AM: pickup around 1:30 to 2 AM.

Cars and luggage

A student or couple with two big bags fits in a Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze or Toyota Etios. A family of four or five with four or five large suitcases should take a Toyota Innova, Innova Crysta or Mahindra Marazzo. When a group of friends and relatives comes along to the airport, a 12-seater or 17-seater Tempo Traveller works well. All cars are air-conditioned.

Drop-off and arrivals

At Delhi the driver drops you at the departure gate for your terminal and helps you load a trolley. Family members can return to Mohali in the same car. For arrivals, the driver waits with your flight details, and you get his name and number on WhatsApp before he leaves.
